Fit Futures Graduate of the Year

2015 WINNER – SHARON BOUWER

All of us at FIT College are proud to announce
2015’s Graduate of the Year – Sharon Bouwer!

Selecting Sharon out of all of our 2015 Graduates was a tough task, but FIT College Tutors and staff were quite impressed with her academic diligence and entrepreneurship. For her excellent work she has won a $250 Rebel Sport Voucher and a 4 month Business Coaching Programme.

Since graduating, she has started her own fitness business Let’s Get Active, giving outdoor group classes in Auckland.

Business is booming for Sharon. She has many loyal and committed clients.
Sharon has shared her experiences with other students as a FIT College NZ guest speaker, and has recently had one of our work experience students working with her.

Sharon also balances out each day as a stay at home mum with her two little ones, Baylee and Teagan

This certificate can take you many places, it can get you into the industry straight away, or it can be a starting block to more study and other avenues like nutrition or specialising in a particular area.

One of the elements of this course is to complete some work experience, this was extremely invaluable to me. I immediately made contacts, was able to network and found myself getting glimpses of living the qualification I was studying for.

Upon entering this qualification I was a stay at home Mum, my previous experience was in an office, i was doing plenty of fitness and health things in my own life, with friends, helping others, and being a part of the fitness industry as a client, but now that I am on the other side as a professional I am loving it even more.

If you are truly passionate about the fitness industry this is a great place to start. From day one when I wasn’t sure if this was the right step for me, I was given lots of information and time from the staff, I asked a lot of questions and not once was it ever a problem, right from before I signed up when I had coffee with the manager (as I needed some more questions answered, mainly because of nerves!) to being supported after graduation with my new business being ‘shared’  on facebook by Fit Futures.

Basically I took the bull by the horns and if i was to do it all over again I would do nothing different, it all ran smoothly and the qualification is reputable and relatable.

We had a chat with Sharon about how the course with Fit Futures helped her get where she is today:

Q: How did FIT College’s Certificate programme and tutors help you in your journey?

Sharon: I had always been passionate about fitness and health, being involved in sports and fitness in some way all my life, I had a great chat to Janelle before starting the course and she helped me decide this was the career path for me! The course opened up a new industry (and world!) for me, I took everything I could from the lectures, practicals, online study, work experience and guest speakers and I ran with it (literally), and started my own business while I was still studying! After graduating I was also supported by many staff and tutors through my journey and still am!

Q: You have mentioned in your talks as a guest speaker that work experience was one of the most valuable aspects in your journey, what were the benefits for you?

Sharon: Doing my work experience was amazing, it gave me a real insight into the industry and also led me to find a mentor. It allowed me to try real life things and to put things into practice, it also showed me what part of the industry I was interested in, and I met amazing people who I still contact now!

Q: Many of our students are also trying to fit the course and prospective businesses in their already busy lives, how are you able to balance everything with work, family, and every day life? Any tips for current students or recent grads?

Sharon: I did the part time course which was a good mix of online and class room time. My tips would be; to be one week ahead of the course work at all times, to ask the tutors everything (even if it feels silly) and to read every extra reading, do every practical, and practice what you are learning with your friends on the weekend, i did! I was able to keep on top of my study while being a stay at home Mum, starting my business and also having a life, I did this by taking it seriously and committing! The course is fun but also comprehensive and serious, If you are passionate and committed to this industry then join Fit Futures!

The Fit Futures team are so proud

Keep up the great work Sharon!
